It might be a fear of what will happen in the future. It might be about health, relationships, career, financial security. It might be guilt about the past. You may feel like a victim or alone and that things will never change. What is your stuck story? Who is in it? Who do you blame for where you are? People want to keep salaries secret They wont take cash to reveal them

People want to keep salaries secret They wont take cash to reveal themPeople want to keep salaries secret They wont take cash to reveal themWe all want to know what everyone else is making - thats why salary reports on websites like PayScale, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor are so popular. Understanding the data on how much your peers earn industrywide is a key part of any good salary negotiation. But beyond the realm of those anonymous reporting tools, people arent nearly as keen to discuss their salaries with others. Some workers say theyve even been fired for talking about their earnings.A recent paper from two researchers at Harvard geschftliches miteinander School and the University of California, Los Angeles suggested just how unwilling we are to talk about our salaries. The researchers asked 752 employees of a multibillion-dollar commercial bank if they would be willing to pay money to stop an email informing five of their peers how much they earn, or be paid in exchange for that email being sent.About 80% of them were willing to fork over cash to prevent the email from being sent. Moreover, 40% said they wouldnt accept $125 cash in exchange for sending the email. They also found that people are pretty bad at guessing each others salaries - the average error margin of guesses was 16%. For example, one might believe that their peer makes $80,000. According to the average error found in the study, that person is likely to make as much as $92,800 or as little as $67,200.Only 27% of individuals in the study, first reported by MarketWatch, were within a 5% accuracy of their peers earnings. While its illegal to fire an employee for discussing their salary at work, there are still serious taboos around discussing it.For example, if an employee reveals to a coworker that she gets paid more, her peers may stop treating her well, or if her manager finds out, the manager may deny her a raise, the researchers wrote. Still, the researchers noted myriad benefits for discussing pay - it empowers you when negotiating salary, switching managers, or searching for new jobs.Pay transparency has also been cited as a way to fight the pay gap separating white men from women and minorities.Meanwhile, it seems that the cultural tendency to shy away from talking salary is shifting.Millennials are much more likely to feel comfortable discussing pay with their coworkers, as Business Insiders Chris Weller reported. A survey from The Cashlorette, a personal finance site run by Bankrate, found 30% of millennials are okay with talking about their pay with their coworkers compared to 8% of those aged 53 to 71.Tech startups like Buffer and SumAll have all employees salaries available to view on an internal network, Business Insiders Tanza Loudenback reported. Netflix has transparent pay among top-level employees.Whole Foods, which employs 87,000, has a similar transparency policy. Co-CEO John Mackey said that the policy, which he introduced in 1986, was designed to boost mo tivation.Im challenged on salaries all the time, Mackey said. How come you are paying this regional president this much, and Im only making this much? I have to say, because that person is more valuable. If you accomplish what this person has accomplished, Ill pay you that, too. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

The Benefits of Working in a Small Law Firm

The Benefits of Working in a Small Law FirmThe Benefits of Working in a Small Law FirmMost attorneys in private practice are employed by small law firms, defined as those with fewer than 20 lawyers. The majority work in even smaller firms. Almost half of all lawyers in private practice are solo practitioners. Another 20 percent are employed by firms of 10 attorneys or fewer, according to the American Bar Associations 2016 Lawyer Demographics report. Employment in a small law firm presents a unique set of advantages. 01Your Work May Be mora VariedLawyers in small law firms are often generalists and engage in challenging, varied work across a broad spectrum of practice areas. This can be a marked contrast tothe high degree of specialization seen in manylarge law firms. The exception for small firms is the boutique law firm, which usually focuses its practice on a specific, niche area of law.02Small Law Firms Offer Flexible Work SchedulesThe cozy, adaptable environment of a small law fi rm can lend itself to mora flexible work schedules among lawyers and staff. There may be fewer hands to contribute to those inevitable all-hands-on-deck emergencies that mark some areas of law, but a sense of camaraderie and teamwork often provides balance.03Youll Gain More Hands-On ExperienceNew attorneys and paralegals may perform mora substantive legal tasks with less supervision than their mega-firm counterparts because thestaff is more limited in a small law firm. This may lead to more errors that could put the law firm at risk unless safeguards in place, but it generally produces a faster-paced learning environment.04Youll Have Significant Client ContactAssociates in small law firms may operate with greater autonomy and have more client contact than those working in large law firms where client contact is often reserved for more senior lawyers. This situation might be your ideal if youre a people person and enjoy one-on-one contact with those youre helping.05Small Law Firms Of fer Informal, Relaxed AtmospheresUnlike more conservative mega-firms, the small firm culture is often more relaxed. Dress codes are less formal, and socializing among employees is often more common, from major events like a daughters wedding to Friday evening happy hours.Everyone knows each other on a first-name basis in a small law firm, which can foster friendly, comfortable working relationships.06Small Law Firms Have Abbreviated Partnership TracksThe road to partnership in a small firm may be shorter than that of a large law firm because there are fewer attorneys and layers of management. This can be particularly advantageous if you prefer a faster track to success. With fewer employees vying for assignments, promotions, and a slice of the profits, legal professionals in small law firms face less in-house competition than their big-firm counterparts.Small law firm employees can more easily prove their worth to those in power, making it simpler to garner recognition and reward.07Y oull Have Greater Input Into Firm Processes and ManagementWorking for a small law firm may allow legal professionals greater control in the direction and management of their firms. Hierarchies are often less carved in granite, so senior partners may be more willing to hear suggestions and opinions from staff.

Is It a Good Idea to Be Friends With Your Boss

Is It a Good Idea to Be Friends With Yur Boss Do we like our bosses? According to a recent survey from Spherion Staffing Services, the vast majority of us do 74 percent of surveyed employees said their relationship with their boss was excellent or good. But that doesnt meanour bosses are ourfriends. Spherion found thataslight majority (51 percent) of employees say that their bosses are not their friends, and that only 46 percent of workers ever spend time with their bosses outside the office. Forty-one percent of employees said they consider their relationships with their bosses no matter how good those relationships are to be exclusively professional. For me, Spherions survey raises an interesting questionShould employees be friends with their bosses?Ive always felt that the answer is Yes. Why would I want to work for someone I didnt consider good enough to be my friend? (Shoutout to my current manager, who often Skypes me to talk about bourbon. Shoutout to our CEO, who gave me a signed copy ofThe Basketball Diaries when I moved out of state.)According to Spherion Division President Sandy Mazur, though, Im thinking about this all wrong. Theres a lot more to boss-employee relationships than whether or not you think your manager is cool. The Benefits and Drawbacks of Being Friends With Your BossIf you look at Spherions survey results, it seems that being closewith your boss can bring some serious benefits. Fifty-six percent of the employees surveyed said people with more personal relationships with their bosses get more one-on-one time with their managers, and 52 percent of employees said workers who are friendly with their bosses get more schedule flexibility. But heres the thing those benefits only seem good to you. They dont necessarily look all that great to your colleagues, who may believe (rightly or wrongly) that youre receiving unfair special treatment from your boss as a result of your friendship. As Michele Lando has written for this website, your coworkers perceptions of you can seriouslyimpact your career. If your coworkers think youre the beneficiary of some sketchy favoritism, they may make your life a living hell in the office.Employeesdont want to be seen as someone who is gaining favor, Mazur says. They want everyone to be equally rewarded and recognized.Maybe thats why 66 percent of employees dont want to have closer relationships with their bosses than they already have.Furthermore, four out of five employees in Spherions survey said their relationships with their bosses had positive impacts on their careers but, as Mazur points out, those four-in-five employees may not be friends their bosses. In fact, it may be the one in five who say their relationships with their bosses have negatively impacted their careers that are friendly with their bosses.Consider this If you are very close friends with your boss, you may be reluctant to le ave your company even if leaving would mean taking a great new opportunity to boost your career. You (and Your Boss) Have to Do Whats Right for YouClose, personal relationships between bosses and employees are double-edged swords, which means employees should think long and hard about the kinds of relationships they cultivate with their higher-ups.You certainly dont want to be seen as someone who is getting special perks or favors because ofthat relationship, Mazur says. As with any friendship in a work environment, you have to be very careful and cautious about how you build those relationships.Ultimately, Mazur believes that how friendly bosses and employees get is a personal choice. Theres no clearly correct answer here. Its a very personal choice theres no right or wrong way to do this, Mazur says. Its kind of up to the employee and the employer to walk that fine line.Speaking of the employer Bosses play a role in determining how personal or professional theirrelationships are w ith employees, too.As a boss, your employeesare important to you. Their lives are important to you, and their families are important to you. Thats what makes solid teams, Mazur explains. But its up to you and what you and your employees are comfortable with. And theres one final element to consider in all of this What counts as friendship depends, in large part, on how we each personally draw the lines between friendly and professional. Its such a personal choice, and people define friendship in different ways as well, Mazur says. I consider all of my staff my friends but I dont go to plays with them. But were there for one another.

Sample Internet and Email Policy for Employees

Sample Internet and schmelzglas Policy for EmployeesSample Internet and Email Policy for EmployeesAn effective internet and email policy that helps employees understand what is expected of them as it affects their work and workplace relationships is a must for employers and employees. You want to go on record to define what employees can do from work-provided devices or employee-owned devices that are used for or involve your employees, your workplace, or your company. According to Statista.com, In 2019, it is estimated that there will be around 2.77 billion social network users around the globe, up from 2.46 billion in 2017. Social network penetration worldwide is ever-increasing. In 2017,71 percentof internet users were social network users and these figures are expected to grow. With more than 85 percent of the people in the U.S. accessing social media, guidance about what employees can say and share has become more important. Employees dont mind guidelines because they dont want to act inappropriately and cross a line they didnt know existed. So, the development of a fair, understandable, sensible policy is strongly recommended as is training your employees by supplying many examples of proper and improper internet and email usage. Consider using this sample internet and email policy to provide clear guidance to your employees about what is appropriate use at work. Adapt it, of course, to suit the needs of your culture and the environment you want to provide employees at work. To be sure of legalities in your area and in your industry, please consult an attorney. Sample Internet and Email Policy for Employees Voicemail, email, and internet usage assigned to an employees computer or telephone extensions are solely for the purpose of conducting company business. Some job responsibilities at the company require access to the internet and the use of software in addition to the Microsoft Office suite of products. Only people appropriately authorized, for com pany purposes, may use the internetto access and download additional software. This authorization is generally exclusive to decisions that the information technology (IT) department makes in conjunction with philanthropisch resources. Software Access Procedure Software needed in addition to the Microsoft Office suite of products must be authorized by your manager and downloaded by the IT department. If you need access to software or websites bedrngnis currently on the company network, talk with your manager and consult with the IT department to explain what returns you expect to receive from the product. All reasonable requests that are not considered a network risk will be considered for you and other employees. The purpose of this policy is not to restrict employee access to products that will make you more productive. The goal is to minimize the risk to the organizations network. Company Owned Equipment Any device or computer including, but not limited to, desk phones, sm artphones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, and iPads that the company provides for your use, should be used only for company business. Keep in mind that the company owns the devices and the information on these devices. If you leave the company for any reason, the company will require that you return the equipment on your last day of work. You may use personal electronic devices that are not connected to the company network to access any appropriate internet site during breaks and lunch. Internet Usage Internet use on company time or using company-owned devices that are connected to the company network is authorized to conduct company business only. Internet use brings the possibility of breaches of the security of confidential company information. Internet use also creates the possibility of contamination to our ordnungsprinzip via viruses or spyware. Spyware allows unauthorized people outside of the company potential access to company passwords and other confidential info rmation. Removing such programs from the company network requires IT staff to invest time and attention that is better devoted to making technological progress. For this reason and to assure the use of work time appropriately for work, we ask staff members to limit internet use. Additionally, under no circumstances may company-owned computers or other electronic equipment, including devices owned by the employee,be used on company time at work to obtain, view, or reach any pornographic, or otherwise immoral, unethical, or nonbusiness-related internet sites. Doing so can lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Social Media Your employer understands that part of what you do in social media is outreach that recruits new employees and enhances our company brand. Many employees have social media responsibilities in their job description, including social media marketers, tech support, and recruiters. Your employer also understands that the relations hip of our employees to an online world that you spend time in 24/7 can lead to the blurring of work time and off work time. We strongly encourage you to limit the use of social media to work-related content and outreach during work hours. Additionally, you are prohibited from sharing any confidential or protected information that belongs to or is about the company. You are strongly encouraged not to share disparaging information that places your company or coworkers in an unfavorable light. The companys reputation and brand should be protected by all employees. The lives and actions of your coworkers should never be shared online. Please notenzeichen the preferences of fellow employees who are parents before you use the name of their children online. In social media participation from work devices or during working hours, social media content that discriminates against any protected classification including age, race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability, or genetic information is prohibited. It is our companypolicy to also recognizesexual preference and weight as qualifying for discrimination protection. Any employee who participates in social mediawho violates this policywill be dealt with according to the companyharassment policy. Email Usage at the Company Email is to be used for company business only. Company confidential information must not be shared outside of the company, without authorization, at any time. You also are not to conduct personal business using the company computer or email. Please keep this in mind, also, as you consider forwarding non-business emails to associates, family or friends. Non-business related emails waste company time and attention. Viewing pornography, or sending pornographic jokes or stories via email, is considered sexual harassment and will be addressed according to our sexual harassment policy. Immediate termination is the most frequent disciplinary actionthat the Company may take in these cases. Emails That Discriminate Any email content that discriminates against any protected classification including age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or genetic information is prohibited. It is our companypolicy to also recognizesexual preference and weight as qualifying for discrimination protection. Any employee who sends an email that violates this policywill be dealt with according to the harassment policy. These emails are prohibited at the company. This is the worst flu season in a decade. The CDC reported this month that there have been 10 new child deaths and the highest flu hospitalization rate since 2010. So in other words, if you are exhibiting any symptoms of the flu or really any sickness, DO NOT GO INTO WORK. Call out sick. You are not a hero if you go to the office when you basically have the plague. So now that you have accepted you are sick (this is often the hardest part) and will be staying home for the day, its time to notify your boss.Looking for an inspiring way to departure your day? 6 Salary Negotiation Tips for Millennials

6 Salary Negotiation Tips for Millennials 6 Salary Negotiation Tips for Millennials Negotiating your salary as an early-career employee is a challenge: After all, you cant offer a wealth of experience or specialized abilities and talents built up over the course of a career. And employees in the early stages of their career may require a lot from colleagues and managers: mentorship, direction, and training. No wonder many millennials may feel reticent to negotiate; a survey by Nerd Wallet and Looksharp revealed that only 38 percent of respondents negotiated with employers. This is a real missed opportunity. Employers expect to engage in salary negotiations and often build in wiggle room while making their initial offers. Read on to find out why salary negotiation is so important for millennials - particularly in the early stages of your career - and winning strategies that can increase an offer. Why Salary Negotiation Is So Important There are more reasons to negotiate your salary than just getting more money in your wallet - for one thing, it shows employers that you are confident in your worth, and asserts from the get-go that you are a valuable employee. Plus, since employers often expect to negotiate, failing to do so leaves money on the table. Negotiating those early offers reaps long-term financial rewards over the course of your career. Percentage-based bonuses and raises will be bigger, for instance, if your starting salary is that much higher. Plus, salaries tend to follow you from job to job: During interviews, you may be asked about your current salary or your salary history. However, is some locations employers are prohibited from asking. 6 Salary Negotiation Tips for Millennials 1. Do Your HomeworkSimilar roles in similar industries tend to have something else in common: the salary range. Note that geography can play a big role as well - the same job, even for the same company, may have a different salary on the coasts, where the cost of living is high, compared to areas with a lower cost-of-living. Salary numbers are often opaque. Friends, family, and co-workers can be reluctant to share details. The internet, however, and anonymous surveys, can help you research industry salaries, or even salary ranges at a specific company. Try sites like FairyGodBoss, Payscale, and Glassdoor to learn more about industries and companies. And use free salary calculators to help know what offers to expect. 2. Consider the Full Package - Not Just the SalaryBefore a job offer, the salary can feel like the biggest question mark, and also the biggest motivating factor. But other benefits make a big financial difference to your life, too: A match in your retirement account, for instance, is basically the same as salary (its just money that you wont be able to touch for years and years). If there isnt much room for you to negotiate for the salary, see if there is any wiggle room for better benefits and perks: You can ask for more vacation days, a consistent work-from-home day, stock offerings, or other non-salary perks. Here are important questions to ask about the benefits package  and some perks that may be negotiable. 3. Be Reasonable in Your AsksThe millennial generation is often summed up with one word: entitled. Setting aside whether thats true or not - it can be argued that its not a fair or accurate assessment - the reality is its one of the many assumptions millennials face during the job application process. Avoid feeding into it by being reasonable in your requests throughout negotiation. Ask for one or two things - negotiating for a higher salary, more vacation days, and a change to the leave policy is perhaps too many requests and might make the company wonder if you are even planning on working. Before you negotiate, make sure you know how to make a counteroffer, and whats reasonable to ask for. 4. But Do Always Ask - Especially If Youre a WomanHeres the flipside to being reasonable in your salary request: If you dont ask, you dont get. Its a cliché for a reason - companies do typically expect a certain level of negotiation. While its possible your counteroffer will be turned down flat, its also possible that you will get a bit more money (if not your entire request). Dont leave money on that table! And if youre a woman, this advice goes double: Thats because as of 2018, women make 80 cents for every dollar earned by men. There are many complicated factors influencing the discrepancy between male and female wages in the United States, but one of them is that women are less likely to negotiate a job offer. Here are strategies women can use to negotiate a higher salary. 5. Take a MomentAn important thing to remember about salary negotiations is that youre not playing a card game or making a wager on Jeopardy. You dont have endless time to deliberate and research, but youre not going to get played off the stage for spending a few hours - or even a day - planning a counter offer or thinking about how to negotiate. Take the time to evaluate the job offer to make sure its the right opportunity to you. Your patience may even encourage the company to make a counter offer without you requesting it! 6. Make a Good ArgumentIts possible that a company may offer X dollars, and when you counter with Id like Y dollars, the company will agree. But its a better plan to make a pitch for why you deserve more. Your research can help. Instead of saying Id like Y dollars, you can say, In industry X, a salary of Y dollars is more common. Reminding an employer of industry standards is a successful technique. But even better is to frame your negotiation in terms of the benefits youd bring the company - remind the employer of why they offered you the job, and want you on their team. Also, be careful about how you ask. There are some things that wont help you get a better offer if you mention them during salary negotiations.

How to Negotiate a Higher Paralegal Salary, Even in a Conservative Economy

How to Negotiate a Higher Paralegal Salary, Even in a Conservative Economy How to Negotiate a Higher Paralegal Salary, Even in a Conservative Economy */ Wondering how to negotiate your paralegal salary increase? Although the nation’s economy is stronger than it has been in several years, it’s still not so robust that law firms have extra money to spend on company-wide raises. Still, that doesn’t mean you have to settle for the same paralegal salary year after year. You should definitely ask your manager for a pay increase, especially if it’s been several years since your last one â€" but you have to be strategic about it. Here are some things to keep in mind as you prepare and deliver your pitch. Prove your worth Before approaching your manager to negotiate a boost  to your paralegal salary, think about recent instances that demonstrate you’re worth more to the firm than what you’re currently being paid. For starters, ask yourself these questions: Do the firm’s lawyers see you as an indispensable team member with specialized knowledge? Jot down specific examples of how you’ve supported them in this capacity. Look through your email and written correspondences for thank-you messages that describe a job especially well done. Have you recently completed courses that boosted your skills, such as tech training and continuing legal education? Have you helped the firm in gaining a new client or retaining an especially valuable one? How much was this effort worth? Have you saved the company time or money by implementing new practices? Write down how, and how much. Have you recently taken on tasks that are not in your original job description? These questions are just a springboard. With this exercise, you can determine your increasing worth to the firm and provide the tangible evidence that proves you deserve a higher paralegal salary. Research current market rates on your paralegal salary Before you ask for a raise, you should have an amount in mind. Find the latest paralegal salary range for your ZIP code by running the data through Robert Half Legal’s Salary Calculator. The Robert Half Legal Salary Guide, which includes information on current hiring trends, is also a great resource. If your paralegal salary is below the market rate, you’ll have a very strong case, especially if you can also show how your value has increased since your last raise or since you were first hired. Even if your pay is already at or near the high end, you can still ask for an increase. Just focus on the fact that you’re worth more than your present salary based on your many invaluable contributions to the firm. How to make your case There’s no doubt that asking for a salary increase can be nerve-wracking. That’s why it’s important to role-play the scenario with a friend before you walk into your boss’s office. Like a good litigator, anticipate possible questions and prepare your responses. In addition, document all the information you’ve gathered about your increased value to the firm and about the average paralegal salary for your region.   When you do sit down with your manager, start off the meeting by emphasizing how much you enjoy your job. Then go through all the reasons why you feel you merit a raise. Finally, present your desired salary and back it up with data.   Even though the economy is still recovering, it’s possible to successfully negotiate a pay increase. The keys are to do your research, gather the data, practice negotiating, and make a watertight case for why you deserve a higher paralegal salary.

Groom Finance Teams to Be Trusted Advisors

Groom Finance Teams to Be Trusted Advisors Groom Finance Teams to Be Trusted Advisors For many years, accounting departments were walled off from other parts of the business as they focused on auditing, accounting, organizing and controlling the company’s finances. They are being asked to take a bigger picture of the organization’s needs than ever before and are taking roles as trusted advisors.   They still have these priorities today, of course, but employers increasingly depend on their finance teams to provide more than numbers to the rest of the company.   “The landscape has changed, and finance is considered a much more vital part of business partnerships than before,” says Syed Hussain, vice president of Robert Half Finance Accounting, North America. “For managers, it’s critically important now to empower finance professionals at all levels to fully integrate their knowledge.” What can you do to prime the members of your finance teams to become trusted advisors? 1. Integrate your finance teams in the business In a Robert Half survey, 85 percent of CFOs interviewed said that over the past three years, their roles have expanded outside of traditional accounting and finance, with human resources and information technology the most commonly cited areas. The influence of finance teams as trusted advisors within organizations needs to be widened, also. “Companies should move their finance teams to the front line of initiatives and get them more involved in the company’s business,” Hussain says. For example, in the non-profit industry, the business development team and the finance team don’t always see eye to eye on the way funds or grants are accounted for. “A simple solution,” he adds, “could be to educate the business development team in finance - and also to integrate the finance teams in fundraising efforts.” Similarly, in for-profit industries, Hussain says, it’s imperative for the finance and sales divisions to be completely aligned with the organization’s goals and targets.   2. Strive to develop trusted advisors within your organization Business acumen is an essential but often overlooked skill for finance and accounting experts. But it’s not enough for them to contribute their knowledge; they also need to be groomed to become trusted advisors. By implementing leadership training programs, you can help your finance team members stretch beyond the basic job requirements and increase their effectiveness so they can help make the best decisions for your company. 3. Teach them more about how to tap big data Hussain says managers should make sure their finance teams are developing cutting-edge business analytics skills. Why? Data and analytics are becoming increasingly important to business operations, and leveraging big data can yield powerful insights into a firm’s operations and customer trends. Yet 90 percent of finance leaders and managers say they have trouble hiring staff with the skills to analyze and interpret big data. Read Building a Team to Capitalize on the Promise of Big Data, a report from Robert Half and IMA ® (Institute of Management Accountants). 4. Embrace the challenges of regulatory change Whether you own a small business or manage a large department, you’re undoubtedly aware of sweeping changes in the finance field brought about by new regulatory and financial reporting requirements. Offer specialized training to keep your employees on the cutting edge of the ever-evolving regulatory initiatives. With a little research, you can pinpoint the ideal regulatory compliance training opportunities for your specific industry. 5. Make hiring and succession a business planning priority With the recent job reports in the U.S. showing low unemployment and a shrinking workforce, it’s easy to see that conditions are challenging for finance leaders looking to hire top performers with the abilities to become trusted advisors. That’s why it’s essential to maintain a strategy for recruiting, hiring and onboarding employees. Regardless of company size, whenever a key leader retires or there’s an unexpected absence, you need to have a clear plan to maintain employee morale, along with efficient operations. Succession planning is the culmination of career and leadership development. It’s where you identify - from among your developing leaders - individuals who have the most potential and whose movement toward key positions, either laterally or upwardly, you want to accelerate. In the future, those who handle your company’s finances will continue to be valued for their expertise. Their roles and contributions to the decision-making process will evolve and grow with the right tools and the guidance of forward-thinking finance leaders, like you. Surround yourself with trusted advisors who know your company as well as your accounting and finance teams do - and keep grooming them for success.   Subscribe to our newsletter When you subscribe to the Robert Half newsletter, you’ll get articles and resources to help you build and manage a winning accounting and finance team - all sent directly to your inbox. How to Stay Up-to-Date on Current HR Employment Laws

How to Stay Up-to-Date on Current HR Employment Laws How to Stay Up-to-Date on Current HR Employment Laws A reader asked an excellent question. She wanted to know how Human Resources practitioners kept up-to-date on Federal and state policy issues that affect Human Resources. Laws and policies are ever-changing and they vary from state to state and in various world-wide countries. The variation is even greater if you serve an international team because you have employees in more than one country. For example, healthcare,  labor and employment laws, retirement, injury and worker’s compensation, unemployment, paid time off, and other laws and regulations that affect employment all deserve constant attention.  She asked if a database or some other resource existed that will help HR practitioners keep track of state, Federal, and international HR-related policies? The Bad News About Keeping Up With State, Federal, Local, and International HR Resources Lacking a single source to recommend for keeping up-to-date with the US and worldwide employment laws and regulations, most HR managers have cobbled together a number of ways to keep track of changing laws and policies. Most people who work in HR have created a similar list. Its not the best, but it does help keep HR managers up-to-date on the laws and regulations. This is increasingly important in this litigious world in the US. Worldwide is perhaps better but you still want to follow the law. Employment law questions are part of the workday, pretty much every day, when you work in HR. It seems that every employees situation is an exception so you struggle to treat employees fairly and with a consistent approach. You want to make wise decisions for the business but you want to look out for the interests of employees as well. You know that you are setting precedents for other employees every time that you make a decision so you must take that into consideration, too. All of this thinking and decision making is in addition to knowing and understanding existing case law and court decisions. It also recognizes the friction that can exist between the interests of the employees and the interests of the organization. Resources for Staying Up-to-Date in HR Subscribe to the Society for Human Resource Managements legislative updates. To receive them, you definitely need to become a member. They have other useful newsletters and tools and access to the website is important for staying abreast of changing laws and regulations. They offer a lot of free content, but the most important articles and policy samples reside behind a paid-only firewall. The most important way that many companies are kept up-to-date, though, is to have an employment law attorney on a contract and their office sends legislative updates for anything going on in your state or at the Federal level. For example, recently, substantial guides to the Affordable Care Act changes have been a priority. Hire an attorney who takes time to know you, who understands your company culture and the goals that you have with your employees. Subscribe to email updates from the Department of Labor and subscribe to email updates from your state Department of Labor (or its equivalent), too. Every state has an equivalent organization that deals with employment law and rules and regulations for the specific state. You can find links to the state offices at the DOL website. Many countries have an office dedicated to employment as well. All of their organization names vary but they all help you stay in the know.Public sector employment: no opportunity exists that will let you check all states regulations at one location. People with a specific state or country question need to contact their equivalent of a department of labor. Readers have also found State and Local Government on the Net which provides some links to topics, useful. The best resource found in the private sector is BLR-HR. If you visit their site, you can search various employment topics by the state in which your employees are located. It is a premium subscription site for much of its information, but it does provide a lot of information at no cost.If you have employees in several states, subscribing to their premium site may also be an option. An annual subscription is pricey,  but you can use their free trial period to assess whether their content will meet your needs.   Its impossible to keep up with all the laws that have an impact on this sites worldwide audience without the assistance of the above resources. To emphasize the most important source of information, one more time: find a professional, knowledgeable attorney and make him or her a part of your HR team. Provide the time necessary for the attorney to understand your approach to employees and your company culture. Youll be happy that you did. The feel good exercise that makes me want to work out every day

The feel good exercise that makes me want to work out every day The feel good exercise that makes me want to work out every day In early January, I was in North Carolina on a work trip, reporting on the Umstead Hotel just outside of Raleigh. Two women led me on a tour of the hotel’s organic farm: one with a neat bob and a polished trench, who worked in marketing for the hotel; one in hiking boots, who worked on the farm and was excitedly pointing out edible flowers and cardamom plants. We were all close in age, and talked about the stuff a group of women who’ve never met before but are quickly bonding do: Growing herbs, favorite restaurants, pets, workouts. “I’ve decided to do try this new thing where I do yoga every day,” I told them. The other girls gave me a look. Daily yoga classes were clearly a more serious fitness commitment than they were expecting me to profess. I wondered if was because I looked ill-equipped to pursue such a rigorous fitness schedule, or because my vibe was more Media Elite Skeptic than She Who Has a Mantra. “No, no, no,” I said. “Just a little something: 20 minutes o f sun salutations in the morning, a restorative stretch in my bedroom before I go to sleep. I’ve been doing these videos on YouTube.Ӊ€œWait - are you talking about Yoga with Adriene?” asked the hotel marketer. I nodded. The farmer gave us both a high five. “You guys, I do Adriene, too.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In the wellness era, as self-improvement has become an ever bigger Big Deal, being “well” is no joke. These days, fitness is increasingly marketed and perceived as an immersive experience, a “lifestyle choice,” costly (for a reason!) and difficult, it sometimes seems, for the sake of being difficult.Like, if you’re not spending more than a car payment on that gym membership - with a 12-month commitment - you’re not really trying. Which may be why for the past decade, I’ve exercised in fits and starts. I get way into SoulCycle/Barryâ €™s Bootcamp/New York Pilates, attend maniacally, and burn out after a few weeks or months - sick of spending half my life and all of my disposable income on $35-plus (each!) exercise classes. I end up ditching it all, and go back to doing nothing beyond walking my dog around the block until the next phenom beckons.I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to realize that the problem wasn’t the exercise, it was the all-or-nothing pressure to turn every muscle twitch into an obsession. Science is on my side here: A study published last year in  Circulation, the journal for the American Heart Association, found that committed but moderate exercise four to five times a week was almost as effective at protecting the heart against aging as the kind of extreme workouts that elite athletes (and Barry’s devotees) do.Hence the new-to-me appeal of Yoga with Adriene: Exercise that is free, low commitment, even…pleasant? That’s the kind a girl could stick with.Which may be what turned 4.4 million subscribers on to Adriene Mishler. Known as “the people’s yogi,” she is the biggest yoga star on YouTube. In 2015, Yoga with Adriene was the most searched workout on Google. Yet her popularity still feels niche enough that I, an avid yoga fan who doesn’t spend a great deal of time on YouTube, had never heard of her until last year, when I asked a friend to recommend the best yoga video one could do in a hotel room. The thing about Yoga with Adriene is that once you start talking about her, you realize everyone in your life is secretly obsessed with her. The friend who first recommended Adriene has done her videos almost daily for at least a year. Another woman I know keeps a count of how many consecutive days she’s done Adriene sessions - the millennial version of a snapstreak. She’s on 436. I know this because she posts the running tally every evening on Instagram Stories.Adriene has posted hundreds of free videos, one for every mood. Her hour-long classes are just as sweaty and challenging as any vinyasa class in a big city studio. There’s a 20-minute video for stretching after travel. Yesterday, I did a 7-minute routine without ever getting off the couch. All are filmed in her Austin, Texas dining room, usually with her cattle dog, Benji, napping in the background. Her body is fit, obviously, and marvelously bendy, but it’s also kind of normal - a welcome relief from the washboard abs and  Terminator  biceps of the mic’d up warriors who teach SoulCycle. And Adriene is slightly goofy: She might advise you to spread your arms as wide as “a big Texas T,” or break out into Janet Jackson’s  All for You  while breathing through warrior pose. Her workouts don’t require straps or blocks or anything, really, but a tiny bit of space and a mat, or even a humble towel. Her instructions are precise and geared toward avoiding injury: When you take your left wrist into your right hand and bend it just so, she lets you know that you should feel that stretch all over your left side, not just in your arm and shoulder. But that’s all just…teaching yoga.If there’s some more ephemeral magic at work here, it’s a specific low-key Adriene-ness. Unlike the classic fitness coach stereotype, she has no expectations, no hardcore goals - she’s not pushing you to do more or try harder. This low-stakes, no-commitment, little-something-every-day approach has made exercise a joyful, and pleasurable, part of my day. Yes, every day. These days, I feel less creaky when I wake up in the morning, my posture has improved, and I’ve noticed some definition in my shoulder muscles. But I keep at it, first and foremost, because it makes me feel good.Yesterday, what made me feel good was a 7-minute couch workout. Tonight I think it’s going be something a little more energizing for an early-evening pick me up. But at the moment, I’m on deadline, so excuse me: I have a date with 12 Minute Yoga for Brain Power. This article w as originally posted on Shondaland. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
