JibberJobber Web-based Relationship Manager vs. Desktop Relationship Manager

JibberJobber Web-based Relationship Manager vs. Desktop Relationship Manager Warning: long post that can be used as a reference post for later. I got the following email from a career coach this morning: Ive been trying to convince coaching clients to use JibberJobber. But Im getting objections to web-based systems. They are concerned about security and want to be able to back up all their data locally.  Do you have any responses to these types of questions that I can provide to them? I wish I had an amazing oh my gosh you must do this and now you really get it response, but I dont.  Let me break this down into two different objections, with my thoughts on each: Its hard to use JibberJobber, in general.  Its hard to put in the data, or it takes too much discipline to keep it going, or I have a sticky-note solution that seems to work just fine. This coach isnt directly asking this, but it has to be addressed because it might be the root problem. If people arent ready to use JibberJobber as their relationship management tool, or as their job search organizer, nothing I do or say can change that. I remember a time I spoke to 100 people and offered the audience 6 months of premium services.  3 people emailed me that week to ask for it.  97 people didnt care.  They werent ready. What would I have done, if I was in the audience? Good Jason wants to say hed definitely take advantage, use it, and get immense value out of JibberJobber. Realistic Jason doesnt think hed use it at all.  Why?  Because it seems like a long-term tool, and Realistic Jason just knew hed have a job offer in the next few weeks.  He didnt need a long-term tool just a pile of post-it notes and hed be fine, until he landed. Smart Jason now looks back and realizes how short-sighted that thinking was, and appreciates the idea of a long-term career management, relationship management system to use for the rest of his life. When you are talking to your friends in a job search they are looking for right-now tools tools that can help them right now!  JibberJobber is an awesome, amazing tool, but it doesnt solve their pain RIGHT NOW!  It might solve many pains in years to come, but some people want RIGHT NOW relief.  And they tend to find it hiding behind job boards.  The only issue is, that relief is temporary and gives them a false sense of hope. Now, when I speak, I offer, but if you dont take it I dont chase you, or try and convince you.  If you are ready, and know you are frustrated because of things that JibberJobber can help you with (like organizing your job search, or tracking were you send resumes, etc.), then you are ready to come, learn, do, invest (time). Until then, I just share various messages and hope you think Im smart/wise enough to listen to every once in a while. When the pain is there, youll be back for JibberJobber. Now, what about this online, in the cloud system?  Is the data safe and secure?  Or should I get a desktop system that I have complete control over? This is one of two classic software questions that CIOs have ask about software they look at buying (or leasing).  (the other question is should we make it ourselves, or should we buy it from a vendor?) Benefits of using a desktop system, like ACT! Buy it once, you own it forever and ever. This is appealing, except every once in a while upgrades come out and you feel compelled to pay as much for an upgrade as you did for the original package, so the $100 list price is not really the final price.  Just give it a few years the features will seem so outdated that either you stop using it or you feel compelled to keep forking over the money for upgrades. You control all of the data no one else can access it, ever. Yeah, unless your system gets hacked into (dont worry, no hacker wants your CRM database its too boring).  Oh yeah YOU cant access it from anywhere but your PC/laptop if you need it, you are out of luck until you go home and login to your system. You dont have to worry about anyone else backing it up, because you can. But do you?  Or, will you restore it?  Ive had about 4 computer crashes in the last 5 years and each time I had backups of Outlook (from Mozy.com).  But each time I just reinstalled fresh, without putting my backups in.  It was too much of a hassle (it really wasnt much work, but it was more than I wanted to deal with). When you get a new computer,  you can just install the disk again, and youll be up and running. Granted, thats if you can find the disk.  I somehow seem to lose all of my software disks Benefits of going with something in the cloud, which is the current cool way of saying someone else hosts it on their server (formerly referred to as ASP (application service provider) or SaaS (Software as a Service)): You really dont have to worry about anything, except is the site down. Systems like JibberJobber (and salesforce and google docs and ___ (there are millions, Im sure)) work really hard to ensure their system is up and running and accessible to you, from wherever you are whether you are at your home computer, on vacation in Panama, accessing from a smart phone, or at your mother-in-laws house. You get all of the updated when they are released. When we fix a bug, add an enhancement, tweak a process, add a new feature, etc. you get that right away, without uploading a patch or an upgrade, or buying an addon.  The code sits on a server when the developers push the new code to the server, everyone automatically gets it.  No effort on your part. We take care of the backups. We backup your data, and our code, regularly.  The backups are treated similarly to how any large company treats their backups with reverence and respect.  They put this data on a tape drive (weird, huh?) and take it off-site regularly (weekly?), in case the whole facility catches on fire the tape drive can be used to restore the entire system.  If this happens well be down for a while, but were in a position to get back up, with no effort on your part (just patience). You get a say in the features we have, and the features you need. Because of the way a cloud system works, its easier for us to add enhancements and tweaks to the code than if we were doing the traditional (old-fashioned) software development.  As an example, lets say we need to change a word on your screen.  We can do that easily, for all users, and keep it all consistent.  If we had a package like ACT!, wed have to do it in version, and it would only work on certain versions and getting that patch to you would be a nightmare. We can try things out. LinkedIn tries things out all the time, throwing a new feature in to a certain set of users to see what they think about it without introducing it to everyone.  Its sometimes frustrating for people to either see, or not see, a new feature, and then have it moved or taken away.  We dont do that much (hardly at all), but its a great way to test an idea instead of pushing everything out all the time. I have to admit, Im rusty at this debate since I havent had to go through it in a corporate setting for a long time.  Id love to hear other reasons by IT types, who have to evaluate this stuff regularly. The bottom line, though, is that if someone isnt ready to jump on JibberJobber, they wont.  I cant spend time chasing them and convincing them sometimes no amount of talking will do. Myth #2 Your degree dictates your career. University of Manchester Careers Blog

Myth #2 Your degree dictates your career. University of Manchester Careers Blog If you’re studying archaeology and you want to be an archaeologist, then absolutely go for it. Sometimes your degree subject will lead directly into what you want to do after university. But if you’re a History student sick of being told you’ll be a teacher, a Law student who isn’t a budding barrister, or a sciences student wanting out of the labs, then your degree doesn’t set a limit on what you can do after graduation. Ask the (adultier) adults you know â€" and that includes Careers Consultants â€" if they’ve ended up doing what their student-selves thought they would be doing. It’s highly likely they’ll say “no” but equally likely that they all enjoy what they do now. Doing something you like (or even love) is far better than pigeon-holing yourself into a job that directly relates to your degree. As long as you try new things, develop your skills, and get some work experience, your degree could take you anywhere. Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate James Robinson turned down a more ‘obvious’ graduate job with Sellafield Nuclear Power Plant to pursue his passion for radio and now works as a Network Producer for two Key103 radio shows, as he talks about in this video. 6 Things That Happened When I Tried Intermittent Fasting For 30 Days - Classy Career Girl

6 Things That Happened When I Tried Intermittent Fasting For 30 Days Here in my homeland â€" Bulgaria â€" we have a saying: “Eat your breakfast alone, share your lunch with a friend, and give your dinner to your enemy.” I have been thinking a lot about having an early dinner. My grandmother used to apply this principle and she was very healthy and energetic throughout her life â€" always an amazement to the physicians. And now I see that the old knowledge of the benefits of having regular fasting periods has started to emerge once again. But I wanted to see it for myself. I made a commitment to try the intermittent fasting technique and test it out for 30 consecutive days.   That is how I would have some substantial data over a significant period of time, and I would be able to draw my conclusions. So, here is what I did! I decided to do a light version of the intermittent fasting â€" for 30 days I was having my last meal at 6 PM (at least 5 hours before bedtime). I was having brunch at 11 AM, so my fasting period was about 17 hours. Furthermore, once a week I was having a fruit fast (an apple every two hours). And that’s it! During the rest of the time, I was eating my regular meals â€" mostly vegetarian, with lots of fiber and no white sugar. I thought that this regimen would be very harsh and exhausting, but I was pleasantly surprised! Here is what happened during these 30 days of intermittent fasting. 6 Things That Happened When I Tried Intermittent Fasting For 30 Days 1.  Less Bloating During my experiment, I was surprised to find that my belly was feeling much better â€" less bloated and relaxed. And not just during the fasting period, but throughout the whole day. I have been struggling with flatulence and IBS for many years, but intermittent fasting turned out to be one of the most effective natural treatments! 2.  Better Sleep Another great effect of this 30-day challenge was my improved sleep. Although I prioritize sleep to get enough hours of rest, I have been having periods of waking up tired and groggy. And to be honest, I was worried that too many hours without food would make me feel low on energy. But the opposite turned out to be true I was feeling much more energized and vital, and I was waking up more refreshed and well rested. And when I was feeling peckish before bedtime, I would pour a cup of soothing Peppermint tea (unsweetened). It calmed my stomach and relaxed my nervous system. 3.  More Energy As I have mentioned earlier, intermittent fasting helped me really improve my energy level! At first, I was concerned that this eating schedule would be exhausting and it would leave me without energy, but I was wrong. On the contrary â€" I was much more energized, focused and clear-minded as if a fog lifted from my brain! Plus, I was still doing my 20-minute morning workouts on an empty stomach! Intermittent fasting was a real booster! [RELATED:  The 3 Most Popular Weight Loss Myths and Why Theyre Wrong] 4. Better Mood When you wake up feeling well rested and refreshed, full of energy, the logical consequence is that your mood improves as well. But it goes beyond that â€" I was feeling much happier and optimistic on a cellular level! The best word that would describe this wonderful feeling is lightness â€" as if a heavy burden lifted from my shoulders â€" both from my body and my mind! 5. Fewer Cravings One thing that really surprised me about my fasting challenge was the significant decrease in unhealthy cravings! Sounds almost too good to be true! I know for sure that our brain reacts in a very similar manner when we eat white sugar and artificial drugs like cocaine. And the more we eat sweets, the more cravings we have. But when I started fasting, it seemed like my body was detoxing from the addictions and I was having fewer and fewer unhealthy desires. It was definitely one of the best results of my experiment! 6. Weight Loss And of course, this is the obvious result of limiting the food intake and having fewer sugar cravings. I was able to lose some weight, and particularly some stubborn belly fat. As we know the levels of our blood sugar are directly related to the amount of fat we store around the stomach. So, for me, it was logical that decreasing the blood sugar level will positively affect my belly and show some abs. And the good news is that intermittent fasting does not slow your metabolism. On the contrary â€" short periods of food abstinence has been proven to speed the metabolic processes and promote healthy weight loss. And my 30-day challenge absolutely confirmed this! On a final note, my experience with intermittent fasting was definitely very positive and rewarding. I am certainly going to continue to apply this diet principle in my life. Although I felt a bit anxious at the beginning, my worries quickly went out the window! I encourage you to dip your toes in the waters of intermittent fasting! I am sure you will be positively surprised!

The ultimate guide to Freshers Fairs - Debut Freshers

The ultimate guide to Freshers Fairs - Debut Freshers Well, would you look at the time? It’s Freshers’ yet again! Now we at Debut already have bags of content for all you firsties out there. However, there’s one momentous event that all of you will be experiencing That’s right, the elusive Freshers’ Fair. DUN DUN DUUUUH! You’ll have seen posters slapped all over your uni, and the mysterious tents spontaneously appearing around campus. But where the bloomin heck are you meant to start? Because let’s be honest, with all the freebies and sign-ups going on, it’s absolute carnage. So before you get frazzled, here are some insider tips on how to navigate a Freshers’ Fair and come out a winner. Suss out the free shiz You know those people that are dressed as life sized billboards for Domino’s? Go up to them and ask where the stand in the union is, and make your way over for a free slice of pizza. Top tip: you can totally go by multiple times. Cause if you’re like me, one sliver of a slice with not be satisfying. However, don’t ignore the vouchers that they (or anyone else, for that matter) give you! Flyers can have offers for free food or discounted drinks… yes, there may be some advertisements for a random grime night in some seedy bar you’ve never heard of, BUT you should hold on to all the flyers you get and then sift through them to find the gooduns once you’re in the safety of your dorm. As another tip, I also recommend looking outside of your campus. During my first year at Leeds, me and my course-mates ventured into the city centre for a trip to Wilkos, and ended up getting free shots, cocktails and BBQ food from the local Wetherspoons and Yates’s, who were competing for new uni customers. Winner winner, chicken dinner (literally). Stalk some society pages Depending on how big your union is, you may have different days of the fair dedicated to certain types of societies. For example, the Wednesday may be solely for Dance groups. Therefore, if you’ve got a burning desire to take up Bollywood at uni (I mean, who wouldn’t?) then look up what day they’re at the fair beforehand, so you can go along for more info. If you’re unsure about a society, I highly recommend doing this. They’ll have members of the committee there to tell you more about what the group does, how often they meet, if it’s casual or a commitment, and (arguably most importantly) what the socials are like. So you can swing by and ask questions until your hearts content.   Plus, if you check out the social media accounts for societies before the fair you’ll have a pretty good idea of what they get up to, and you’ll be super keen which makes a HUGE impression on any society leader.  I used to run Improv in the Comedy Soc, and if someone came up who’d already done some research on us, they had some serious brownie points with me. There will be guides USE THEM It can be tempting to just go swinging into a Freshers Fair like youre Spider-Man, but lets be frank: these things are manic, manic, manic. You’ll end up joining the flow of people, not knowing how to take the exit at the stands that interest you the most. Every table should be numbered on a map, so just take a glance and that should make you a little less overwhelmed. There will also be sections of the fair dedicated to third-party companies as well as societies. So perhaps you’re looking into joining the University Officers’ Training Corps (UOTC) whilst you study, or you may be interested in getting some cash/incentives by becoming a brand ambassador. There’ll be a section on campus for this, so see where they are located. Plus, if you have a route planned out before you go, you’re more likely to know where to to go to grab all the freebies before they run out. And trust me when I say, they will. Students are the savviest creatures of this world. Check out the discounted stalls It’s all about the three Ps: Posters, plants and pretty good vintage clothes (alright we’re stretching it). But seriously, all three of these things will have dedicated areas at Freshers Fairs. After all, it’s always great to give your room a bit of flare with a brand new spanking cactus or a piece of retro film artwork. The vintage clothing sales are particularly awesome. Often they’ll do a ‘pay as you weigh’ system, or alternatively offer bundles for a number of items. Plus, you’ll be on fleek if you’ve got a vintage jumper for the autumn. Especially if you’re at a hipster-central university (love you really, Leeds). Best of all, the items at these events are a lot more individual and unique than anything you’ll find on the high street, or even on the interwebs. And you’ll be helping the little guy make a living, which is always a major plus. So take the time to have a trawl through the rails and boxes, you won’t regret it! Restoring nature, restoring yourself - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Restoring nature, restoring yourself - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Heres an article about a seriously ill ex-soldier in Seattle, who decided to spend his last days cleaning up a creek near his home. During that project he got better, and today he works with many other people to restore the environment around Seattle. This is a beautiful example of helping yourself by doing something for others, in this case for nature. Sometimes the best way to help yourself is to forget yourself. Thanks for visiting my blog. Dont Let The Economy Stop You - Go For That Executive Job!

Dont Let The Economy Stop You - Go For That Executive Job! Yes, the economy is bad. Yes, jobs can be hard to find. But, what can you do about that, you are telling yourself. You cant help the economy, but you can help yourself out by marketing yourself in the best possible light so that you will be standing above the rest when it comes to the job you are really passionate about getting. Because jobs can be few and far between, it is important to search for the jobs that mean something to you, that fit your skills. It will actually make your job search easier when you try for something you already have experience in. Plus, you will have a lot of information to put on your executive resume. The following are some handy tips that will guide you to success: Job Search Focus only on jobs that you really want. If you mass-post your resume to a lot of sites, chances are you will get interviews but maybe not the ones you really like. Then you will psyche yourself out and take a job you may not like at all while missing the one you really wanted. Your Own Blog In addition to an executive resume, build your online presence with a blog. This is an excellent way to showcase your skills. Start a blog at and write on your experience, the work you have done in the past and jobs you would like to have. You can then link that blog to your social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. This will bring recruiters to your door. Just make sure you are pulling in the right jobs for you. Workplace skills Not only is it important to have the expertise that your resume reflects, you also need to make sure that your personality skills and experience shine as well. Because the job market is tough right now, it is more important than ever that your office demeanor skills are pristine. Make sure you can showcase problem solving skills, conflict resolution skills, a positive attitude and an engaging personality. And dress well for your job, too. Dust off your resume and clean it up. Highlight the most important aspect of you and your skills. You will be surprised at how many job offers you will start receiving.
